Rivka Kauffmann - Shannon
Stats
Gender: Female
Age: 30
Nature: Bear
Occupation: Social worker by day, part-time writer by night.
Appearance:
Rivka is a substantial woman. She’s about 5’6” and big-boned. She’s not exactly obese, but she’s on the stouter side of what’s healthy, although, being a Bear, that’s probably a little bigger than most humans would consider healthy. Her hair is very dark brown, as are her eyes. She and her sister Rachel have the same heart-shaped face, although Rivka’s features are a little coarser, and she was cursed with a stereotypically semitic large nose. When she’s at work, she tends toward slacks and sweater sets, but when she’s home, she often schlubs around in yoga pants or leggings.
As a bear, she is on the large side for a female, brown, and stout. She’s neither the strongest nor the fastest, but she certainly holds her own.
Personality:
Rivka is warm, down-to-earth, and practical. Having been a fixture in Stone Mountain most of her life, she knows a lot of people, and she’s the sort of person who wants all of her friends to be friends with each other. She has a deeply maternal side, which is one of the reasons she went into social work. She’s also fiercely protective of the younger members of the Den, and she’s generally always there with a shoulder to cry on if someone needs her.
Though she is intelligent, she’s not particularly ambitious. She’d like to find a nice man to settle down with and have some babies, but otherwise she is largely content with the hand life has dealt her.
She has a minor crush on Jacob. It’s not a thing she would ever act on, because she knows nothing would happen, but her ideal romantic partner shares many characteristics with him. In fact, the stock photo she used for her last book, cleverly titled Having the Werebear’s Baby, bears an uncanny resemblance to the Major. Someone should point this out to her. Or, better yet, to him.
History:
Rivka was the oldest daughter of Chaim and Hanna Kauffmann. In many ways, her childhood was much easier than that of her younger sister, Rachel. She was always independent and stubborn, and there was no way her parents even tried to mold her into the type of daughter they wanted, except in the area of academics. She was expected to get straight A’s growing up, attend a good college, and make something of herself. The straight A’s she got, and she did attend the University of Georgia, but once she graduated, she came right back to Stone Mountain.
She began working for Child Protective Services, though her role is a bit specialized. She’s made herself available to the Den, the Pack, and the cat colony in case any of their young have some kind of problem with the state authorities that would otherwise require a social worker’s intervention. She’s quite aware of what would happen if, say, a young Bear cub was accidentally given to some humans to be fostered, and it’s her job to see that things like that don’t happen, and that the young shape-shifters in her care get everything she can give them.
Recently, mostly as a means of escape from what can often be a difficult job, Rivka took up her childhood habit of writing. She has now self-published some five or six romance novels, of the 99-cent Kindle variety. Naturally, she’s taken the advice to write what she knows, so all of her books feature Bear shifters, since those are incredibly popular for whatever reason. There are lots of ridiculously melodramatic storylines in which some poor hapless human meets a strong, domineering bear shifter who makes her his mate. Of course, there are a couple of people in the Den who act as her beta readers, helping to make sure her worlds remain ridiculous and over the top, and don’t reveal any secrets.
Recently, her sister Rachel has moved in with her. Rivka knows a lot more than Rachel thinks she does about her struggles with self-worth after being groomed to be Andrew’s mated female. She’s tried to give Rachel the space to figure out what she wants to do now that bonding to a specific Bear is out of the question, and she’s certainly expressed her opinions about the hell that their parents put Rachel through.
Abilities: She’s a fairly decent writer, and a very good cook. The former she’s used to make a little money; the latter is very much a hobby.
Weaknesses: When she’s tired, she often runs off at the mouth more than she means to, and can be short and snappish with people. She’s also stubborn, and often holds a grudge longer than she should. Her mother often jokes that she’s good at cutting off her nose to spite her face.
Quirks: Recently, she’s discovered a bunch of young adult fantasy novels starring a Jewish lesbian protagonist and her best friend, a bad-ass warrior named, well, Rivka. She’s begun collecting fanart of that character, and she’s taken to recommending the books to just about everyone it’s appropriate to recommend them to.
Weapons: Nope.
Family: Her parents, Chaim and Hanna, and her younger sister, Rachel.
Vehicle: A 2012 Volvo.
Home: An apartment she’s currently sharing with her sister, Rachel.
Character song: Eagle When She Flies by Dolly Parton.
