Rachel Kauffmann - Shannon
Stats
Gender: Female
Age: 22
Nature: Bear
Occupation: Nurse
Appearance:
Rachel is of average height, around 5’7”. By any metric, she is beautiful. She has long, lustrous brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a heart-shaped face, and she has the standard hour-glass figure. She never leaves the house without her armor—she’s a stylish dresser, and you know it’s a lazy day when all she’s done with her face is apply a little lip gloss. Never in a million years would you see Rachel in ripped jeans or wearing something stained.
Personality:
On the surface, Rachel comes across as shallow and superficial. She tries very hard to be nice to everyone she meets, and is careful not to let anyone see any negative thoughts she might be having. Her friends describe her as bubbly and fun to hang out with, but very few know that there is sadness and a bitter self-loathing lurking beneath her cheerful demeanor.
She’s one of those people that wants very badly to find The One ™ and have a relationship. But at the moment, she has so little sense of her own self-worth that she’s never managed to have more than a few casual relationships that never went very far, mostly because Rachel wouldn’t put out and kept having unreasonable expectations about her partners. Her father is very proud of this, and often trots out his daughter’s virginity and purity as a point in her favor, which is mortifying to poor Rachel, who really, really wishes he wouldn’t.
History:
Rachel was born on April 27, 1994. She was the youngest of two daughters, and from an early age, with her cherubic features and sweet smile, she was dubbed the pretty one, while her older sister Rivka got labeled the smart one. And that was in many ways how her life was laid out. Rivka had never tolerated being dressed up in frills and lace, but Rachel didn’t mind when her mother did it. When Hanna Kauffmann enrolled Rachel in ballet classes, Rachel attended faithfully, despite having no particular interest or affinity for the sport. She even suffered being a model in a local magazine photo shoot when she was eight.
The other constant in Rachel’s childhood was Andrew Davis. Since he was her age, Rachel’s parents thought it would be a great coup for them if Rachel were to land Andrew. So it was impressed on her from an early age that, given she was so pretty and so sweet, she should do everything she could to put herself in Andrew’s good graces. This was harder than it seemed. Rachel didn’t particularly share any of his hobbies, despite studying art and comics and trying as hard as she could to understand them. And, well, Rachel was a pretty girl, and Andrew was definitely gay, so she couldn’t attract him in that way.
By the time Rachel graduated from high school, she’d long figured out the thing her parents refused to see. She was never going to be Andrew’s mate, no matter what she did. She’s not even really sure he likes her. This led to many arguments on Rachel’s parents’ part. When he came out, they were certain it was somehow because Rachel hadn’t worked hard to land him, and alternately berated her and assured her that his gayness was a phase.
Meanwhile, Rachel suffered in high school with bouts of bulimia. Drugs had no effect on a young Bear, and neither did booze, so binging and purging seemed like the only way she could feel that she could escape the immense pressure she felt she was under.
She was lucky she managed to hide this from most of the world. She remained a popular student, captain of the cheerleading team and the homecoming queen.
She stuck with Stone Mountain until Andrew got custody of his boyfriend’s cubs. At that point, she realized there was no point trying for him anymore. Only now she had no idea what she wanted to do to live for herself. In fact, she still doesn’t.
She went to Atlanta, where she quickly decided college wasn’t for her. So she got her license to be a certified nurse’s assistant. But she hated the big city, so she ended up back in Stone Mountain, working for Dr. McCoy, and taking classes to become an RN at night. She’s discovered that she genuinely likes the work, and she likes feeling like she can help people when they’re hurting. Some time away has also given her the chance to get some counceling to deal with her bulimia, though the urge won’t ever leave her.
She’s still not a happy person, but she’s trying to get herself on an even keel.
Abilities:
Rachel is still very good at gymnastics, and she’s an excellent dancer. Much to her own surprise, she is also a very good nurse that only needs a bit more training before she will prove useful.
Weaknesses:
She still struggles with food, although she’s learned some techniques to help her handle it better. She’s also afraid of spiders.
Quirks:
She collects Disney memorabilia. Her bedroom at home growing up was an homage to Disney princesses, and it still is even now that she’s grown up.
Weapons: Just teeth and claws.
Family:
Her parents, Chaim and Hanna Kauffman, and her older sister, Rivka. (NPC’s)
Vehicle: A sporty eight-year-old Mazda.
Home: She’s sharing an apartment with her sister Rivka. It annoys her parents that neither of their daughters want to come back home and live with them, but neither of them are willing to do it for different reasons.
Theme Song: Obviously, it is this.
