Mary Rose Holt - Tess
Stats:
Gender: Female
Age: 37
Nature: Human
SPECIAL NOTE: Mary is a TPC (Temporarily Playable Character,) meaning that while you cannot get her into a romance or send her on any other adventures, it's perfectly acceptable to write for her when your character is ordering in The Daily Grind or having a 'hi, how's it going' casual chit-chat with Mary somewhere. If it's something she'd remember or consider important, though-- contact me and I'll write her with your character.
ALSO: Mary is now an adoptable character. If you adopt Mary, co-ownership of The Daily Grind will also belong to you. If you should quite the game, or are no longer an active player according to the Disappearance Policy, Mary and her co-ownership of The Daily Grind will revert to Council control.
Occupation: Owner of The Daily Grind coffee shop.
Appearance: Mary is 5' 8", and her weight- is no one's business but hers (shhh, she wears a size 16). She has dark brown eyes, brown curly hair that she wears just below her shoulder blades, and fair skin covered with fine freckles.
She knows she's heavier than society deems proper, but she's healthy and active and Moose adores her and still gives every indication of being enchanted by her beauty, so Mary never steps on a scale or questions her urge for a second scone or tea biscuit.
Personality: Mary is bubbly and friendly, but also more moody and a touch more pessimistic than her outgoing husband. She wouldn't consider herself a pessimist, however, more like a realistic optimist. While Moose takes a long time to anger and a short time to cool off, Mary tends to have a much shorter fuse and needs more than a smile and a truce of half an hour to get over her pique.
She's not a virago, though, or hard to get along with. She's simply more emotionally variable than her steadfast husband, so seems mercurial by comparison.
History: Mary grew up as the only daughter in an extended family who seemed to spawn only males. She had a privileged upbringing, not so much in material things (her family wasn't poor, but they weren't even "well-off" either) but in sheer security and love. She never had a moment's doubt that she was not beautiful, charming and talented. The fact that she actually was, in some measure, all those positive things only bolstered her happy, self-confident reaction to the world around her.
Mary did well in school, though she was too active in extracurricular activities to be an outstanding scholar. She made decent grades, but she had to work for them and she never made the Dean's list nor did she graduate in the Honors group.
That really didn't bother her, as her real ambition in life was to marry well and raise a happy family. This was a life-goal she didn't share freely, being a teenager at the height of the "I am Woman, hear me roar" era. Mary didn't want to be a Stepford wife, but she wasn't interested in working construction or climbing a corporate ladder, either.
She had known Moses "Moose" Holt all her life, but their paths crossed only occasionally until high school. They found themselves as chemistry lab partners, a cosmic pun that still amuses them. The biggest chemical reaction in the class had been between the two of them. Well, that and the one that caused the entire school to be evacuated…
After graduation, they married and happily struggled as most young couples do while Moose went through college. Shortly afterwards, Mary's paternal grandmother passed away, and while she grieved, she was also deeply grateful for the inheritance she was given.
They managed it wisely, and were glad to not have to struggle past the point where it stopped being a fun challenge and became a burden. Moose graduated a week before Mary delivered their son. When Jason was three months old, they bought the historic old store building that had last been a photography studio, and established The Daily Grind.
Both their son and their business have grown strong and healthy, and Mary is completely content with her life. She had hoped to have more children, but having Jason was enough. Besides, he's promised her at least one grandchild within the next ten years.
Abilities: Mary is a gifted baker. She has the ability to taste a sample, and figure out not only how to reproduce the flavor, but how to enhance it. Like Moose, she also blends brews, but hers are teas and baking mixes rather than coffees.
Weaknesses: Mary can be distrusting, but this is more of a balance to her gullible husband than her own cynicism. She can also be short tempered and get her feelings hurt a little too easily.
Quirks: Refuses to carry herbal teas in their shop. To her, the only proper tea comes from Camellia sinensis . She's as mad for tea as Moose is for coffee.
Weapons: An ear-piercing shriek and a handy pot of scalding fluid.
Family
Moses "Moose" Holt, husband
Jason Randal Holt, son
Vehicle: White 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette minivan, with logos for The Daily Grind on both sides and the tailgate. It's such a wonderful vehicle, dependable, loaded with all the options, always clean—she can't understand why Jason is mortified to be seen in it.
Home: The Holt home is a modest 3 bedroom mid-century ranch on a pleasant street a few blocks away from The Daily Grind. Mary walks to work most mornings with her husband.
