Daniel Lee Clearwater
Stats:
Gender: Male
Age: 45
Nature: Human Psychic
Occupation: DeKalb County Sheriff
Appearance: Daniel is of medium height - about 5'10" - with stick-straight, jet-black hair - not quite short, but cut such that it does not touch the collar of his shirt. His skin is copper, smooth in most places with no signs yet of wrinkles, and little in the way of body hair. His eyes are deep, chocolate brown. He is of average build, though he is in excellent physical shape, muscular and lean.
Personality: Daniel is amiable and friendly in most cases on or off duty, but he is a very focused man when on the job. He always pays the closest of attention to every detail - mostly because he can see things that others cannot. He is sharp minded and quick to make logical connections, a trait that has lent itself well to his career in law enforcement. Sometimes it appears that he is a bit slow to others who may not know him well, but in truth, he is merely thinking, reading, or considering something about someone he sees. He can seem a bit short tempered to some, and he sometimes is - especially when he becomes frustrated by disbelief or skepticism of things that he knows to be true or when people are not making the same connections he is because he can see things they cannot. He is secretive in most cases as to how he knows things and only tells those closest to him about his own, strange preternatural ability.
History: Born: 14 November 1971
Daniel was born to first-generation off-the-reservation parents - that is, his parents both decided to leave the reservation to pursue a life integrated with the whole of mainstream society. From the day he was born, Daniel saw things that others could not see. At first, he did not know that they were not obvious to everyone, but he soon learned that only he could see them, and he learned soon thereafter to keep that information to himself. By the time he had reached his teens, the only one who still believed that he could see these special things was his grandfather.
Daniel's mother's father lived on the reservation - though his father was originally from another - and from the time he was young to the time he turned eighteen, Daniel spent every summer with his grandfather on the reservation. His grandfather believed that his ability was a special gift, and encouraged him to develop it, to learn the meanings behind the things that he saw. Though he was short with anyone else who talked to him about it, Daniel trusted his grandfather more than anyone else, and appreciated the help and insight he provided for him through his traditions, and through his own sharp intellect.
When he graduated from high school, Daniel immediately pursued a career in law enforcement. He was hired by the reservation's own police department - a small force, but a force nonetheless - and worked there until his 21st birthday, when he applied for a position with the county sheriff's department. By the time he was 28, he had made corporal, but he was unhappy with the role he was given. He felt that he did not have enough ability to make decisions and do things the way he wanted. For years, he had built relationships with the people of the county as an officer of the sheriff's department, and finally, fed up with climbing the ladder, he ran for office and defeated the incumbent sheriff at 40 years of age.
Abilities: Daniel sees things - auras - around people, and sometimes the remnants of those auras (though they fade quickly) where people have been. He can tell a person's nature simply by reading this aura. He would describe them - the best way he could - as different colors. Humans are one color, werewolves another, vampires yet another, and each flavor of preternatural has their own color. Nothing about the aura itself reveals the type of preternatural it signifies, but he has learned to associate the "color" of each aura with its respective flavor of preternatural. Beyond this, strong character traits - like "trustworthy" and "loyal" or "liar" and "killer" - are like a different "shade" of their respective colors. He cannot tell with great certainty the minutiae of character traits among most preternaturals - though the shades are similar somehow between colors. He is best at reading human auras, but he can also read extremely strong or unique character traits of preternaturals.
When a very emotional event occurs somewhere, people sometimes leave a bit of their aura behind as a kind of "fingerprint." Though it generally fades within about a day, he can sometimes use this to his advantage. For example, a wedding or a reunion might leave behind a very large, obvious "joy" fingerprint, while a murder would leave behind "anger," "fear," "killer," and "death" fingerprints.
Weaknesses: Daniel is usually quick to make snap judgments. Because of the things he sees, he tends to be right about certain things, but sometimes he might misread or make a connection that just is not there, and this can lead him to look foolish at the least, or make a terrible mistake at the worst. The danger of this kind of misreading mistake has increased since he became sheriff and gained the authority to act on some of his less-than-quantifiable feelings about people and their auras.
Quirks: Daniel considers some auras to be very attractive and others not. Because the aura is such a very strong part of a person, Daniel sometimes tends to see this characteristic of a person before and over their actual physical appearance. Usually, preternatural creatures with noble dispositions tend to have extremely beautiful and exotic auras. Because of this, Daniel finds himself most attracted to people that fit that category.
Weapons: Daniel has access to all of the weapons and tools of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, and he also owns several of his own rifles and hand guns.
Family:
Mother, Hannah Clearwater, +25 years
Father, Seth Clearwater, +28 years
Vehicle: Daniel drives his squad car for work and owns a motorcycle for off-duty transportation.
Home: Daniel lives alone in a modest 1500 square-foot, three bedroom house in Stone Mountain.
