Adam Lazarus Sargent - Iris
Stats:
Gender: Male
Age: 30
Nature: Human
Occupation: Farmer
Appearance: Adam is 6’4’’, broad shoulders and muscles from years of back breaking work, so no six pack besides the one in his fridge. His eyes are hooded and a greenish hazel, his gaze almost always solemn when focusing on something or thinking of how he’s going to get his brothers out of trouble. His dark brown hair is wavy if left to grow, so he keeps it short and easy to manage, and it’s starting to gray early at the sides. His deep voice has a rough quality to it. Due to the nature of his work, what with animals and all, Adam keeps a short full beard, using the mustache to apply some perfume on it when he has to deal with stinky situations.
For clothing, Adam goes for the tried and true comfortable attire that has little variations. Button down shirt or t-shirt, a sweater for the colder months, and jeans and boots that have seen better days.
Personality: Adam has always prided himself of knowing his place. Conservative, Christian, a farmer, and now that the shifters are known, human. He knows who he is, what he is, and that it’s prudent that he don’t get too big for his britches. It’s for this reason he listens more than he speaks, after all, no need to talk the hide off a cow. But when he does, Adam doesn’t mince words and keeps things short, being terrible at small talk and despising gossip.
Of course this also comes with its consequences. Despite being rather understanding, many regard him as brooding and sometimes even rude. Regardless, he does his best to be polite, especially respectful towards women and children, if somewhat awkward.
As a religious man, Adam has enough troubles with his own morals from time to time, and since the shifters turned into a reality and one of his brothers came out of the closet, he’s had readjust his beliefs and his view on reality. Regardless, you can find him in church every Sunday.
History: If Adam has anything to say about his parents, it’s that he was born to a pair of religious maniacs that left him to be the parent they never were.
Born in June 7th, 1987, to bible thumping parents in a small town in South Carolina, near the border with the state of Georgia, Adam’s childhood is a bundle of memories he prefers to pick and choose from, no matter how accepting he is of it. His parents had been strict and near paranoid, clearly authoritarian and sometimes even brutal in their punishments for their children’s mistakes and “sins”.
Distrusting of hospitals, his mother birthed all her children at home with the assistance of her husband, an old, retired midwife, and Adam as soon as he could be of use. As time went by, Adam found himself in charge of the care of his younger brothers and his father’s alcohol problem getting worse.
If he thinks back on his parents’ death, Adam would most likely say it was a tragedy long overdue. After being outside drinking, his father gets in a car accident and dies instantly, his wife four months pregnant with their eighth and ninth children. It’s around that time, after his father’s death, that his father’s estranged brother - Jeremiah - starts calling, wanting to know if they needed anything, and soon Adam learns of his parents’ pasts and his other family. They moved in with his paternal grandmother and it’s five months laterthat his mother died from complications during the delivery.
With that, a parentless fifteen year old Adam and his brothers, Bart and Caleb, are left to pick up the pieces and all have to help to not only raise the baby twins - named Lucas and Dorcas by their Grandmother - but also the younger brothers, Ezra and Isaiah.
With Uncle Jer, Adam learned most of what he knows today, and while going to high school, he made sure to work as much as possible. And with his grandmother, he learned that there was more to faith than the destruction he had witnessed with his parents.
As soon as he finished high school, Adam started working in the farm, taking over his grandfather’s former position while working odd jobs to help out along with his brothers - Bart, Caleb and Ezra - to get the younger ones through better education.
However, by the end of 2016, not only the world is thrown off its axis with the shifter reveal and his brother Isaiah comes out of the closet, but his brothers - Caleb and Gideon - join the army. With the new flux of people into the city, despite how crowded Adam thinks might get, he realizes it’s actually rather good for businesses.
Abilities: Fishing, hunting, farming, and a bit of everything he can learn. The saying “a jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one” fits him just right.
Weaknesses: He doesn’t communicate that much, especially not what he’s feeling, so that tends to get lost in translation. He carries the mantle of caretaker for his siblings, and the guilt for not being able to save his mother.
Quirks: When he laughs, Adam always snorts... Always. It’s hard to get him to truly laugh, but when you can you’ll be rewarded with the full ugly. When nervous, he tends to tug at his earlobe.
Weapons: Fists, swiss army knife, his hunting rifles, and concealed carry permit. If that can’t save him, then he’s just meant to die.
Family:
Bartholomew, Caleb, Ezra, Gideon, Isaiah, Lucas and Dorcas - brothers and sister, in order of birth.
Frank and Adeline Sargent - estranged parents, deceased
Marie Sargent - grandmother, 76
Jeremiah Sargent - uncle, 57, plumber (NPC)
Vehicle: A faded brown second-hand 1980s Ford pickup truck.
Home: Family house, along with his brothers and uncle. It has a large backyard, a shed and a small repurposed barn.
Character song: Simple Man, by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
